October 20, 2011, is the annual celebration of Spirit Day, a day to wear the color purple to denote supporting an end to GLBT bullying. This grass-roots movement was actually begun by Brittany McMillan, a teen herself, as a result of increasing teen suicides among GLBT youth. http://www.glaad.org
